Five disciplines, one tradition
Every class below is free to attend and open to beginners. Choose a subject to see what is taught and when it runs.
Gurbani Santhia
Learning to read Gurbani correctly — every letter, every laga matra, every pause.
Gatka Akhaara
The traditional Sikh martial art — footwork, shastar handling, and the discipline behind both.
Kirtan
Singing Gurbani in raag, from your first note through to leading a full shabad.
Katha Vichaar
Discourse and reflection on Gurbani, Sikh history, and the lives of our Shaheeds.
Tabla
Taal and accompaniment for kirtan, taught from the very first bol.
Gurbani Santhia
Learning to read Gurbani correctly — every letter, every laga matra, every pause.
Santhia is the foundation of everything else we teach. Students learn to read Gurbani with correct pronunciation, working slowly through the text with an ustad listening to every line.
Classes move at the pace of the student. Beginners start with the Gurmukhi alphabet and build towards reading Nitnem confidently; more experienced students work through larivaar text and longer banis.
What you will learn
- Gurmukhi alphabet and laga matra
- Correct uchaaran (pronunciation)
- Reading Nitnem with confidence
- Larivaar reading for advanced students

Gatka Akhaara
The traditional Sikh martial art — footwork, shastar handling, and the discipline behind both.
Gatka is not only a set of techniques. The akhaara teaches focus, respect and physical discipline alongside the handling of shastar.
Students begin with paintra (footwork) and the soti and farri, progressing to other shastar as they develop. Safety and control come before speed at every stage.
What you will learn
- Paintra — stance and footwork
- Soti and farri fundamentals
- Progression to other shastar
- Physical conditioning and discipline

Kirtan
Singing Gurbani in raag, from your first note through to leading a full shabad.
Students learn the vaja (harmonium) from the beginning — hand position, sur, and then the raags in which shabads are traditionally sung.
The aim is not performance but participation: that every student can sit in the sangat and do kirtan with understanding.
What you will learn
- Vaja fundamentals and hand position
- Sur and basic raag
- Shabad reet and taal
- Doing kirtan in sangat

Katha Vichaar
Discourse and reflection on Gurbani, Sikh history, and the lives of our Shaheeds.
Katha Vichaar goes beyond reading into meaning. Sessions work through Gurbani and historical granths, discussing arth (meaning) and how it applies to life today.
Our ongoing series on Sri Nanak Prakash runs alongside weekly vichaar — slides and notes for both are on the resources page.
What you will learn
- Arth — the meaning of Gurbani
- Sikh itihaas and the Shaheeds
- Sri Nanak Prakash series
- Applying Gurmat to daily life

Tabla
Taal and accompaniment for kirtan, taught from the very first bol.
Tabla students learn to accompany kirtan — starting with individual bols, building into theka, and then playing alongside kirtan students in class.
Practice granths and taal notation will be published in our resources section.
What you will learn
- Bols and correct hand technique
- Theka for common taals
- Accompanying kirtan
- Keeping time in sangat
